Hardfiberboards are thin, dense wood-based panels made from finely ground wood fibers. They belong to the fiberboard family but are characterized by particularly high compression (density: 800-1200 kg/m³). They are stable, flexible and have a hard, smooth surface.

Characteristics:

  • High density and strength: Resistant to pressure and impacts.
  • Thin and flexible: Typically 3-6 mm thick, well suited for curved applications.
  • Smooth and workable: One side is smooth, ideal for coatings or paints; the rough side improves adhesion for bonding.
  • Moisture sensitivity: Standard hardboards are not waterproof, though special moisture-resistant varieties exist (e.g. bitumen-coated boards).
  • Printability: The printability of HDF board resembles that of MDF board.

However, with hardboard, only one smooth side can be printed with acceptable results.
