MDF boards (Medium Density Fiberboard) are wood-based materials made from finely fibrous wood (wood fibers) that are pressed with a binding agent (usually synthetic resin) under high pressure and temperature to form a dense, homogeneous board. They are especially known for their smooth surface and uniform structure.

MDF boards are also available in through-color and are partially available with B1 certification.

Characteristics:

  • Homogeneous density: MDF boards have a uniform material structure, making them easy to work with.
  • Smooth surface: Ideal for lacquering, veneers, and coatings.
  • Shape stability: Highly resistant to warping or swelling in dry conditions.
  • Moisture Sensitivity: Standard MDF is not water-resistant, but there are special moisture-resistant variants (e.g., MDF-H).
  • High Edge Strength: Well-suited for milling work as the edges do not fray.
  • Printing Properties: Print quality depends on the material quality, with the higher-quality board preferred over the inferior one.

A white underprint is usually recommended here, as the surface is almost unrecognizable as wood, with no grain or other wood-like characteristics present.
